Understanding Key Signatures

You are listening to the radio and you hear "... that was Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E flat Major.." 
There it is! You were just given they key or key signature of the music.

A musical key is basically a collection of notes that give a particular sound. For the most part, that sound is either Major or minor. 
In the sound clip on the right, you will hear me playing a little tune, first in a Major key and then I will change a note or two so you hear it in a minor key. 

Have a listen now... Can you tell the difference? When hearing Major vs. minor is explained to children, the two are often described as Happy vs. sad. Can you hear that slightly more sombre quality of the minor version of the tune? Have a few listens until you start to distinguish the two sounds, Major vs. minor...
